Two individuals from Chile were apprehended after allegedly burglarizing a home in San Juan Capistrano and leading deputies on a high-speed pursuit in Orange County. The suspects, Jorge Navarretecorvalan and Alejandro Tobarfuentes, both aged 32, were reportedly in possession of designer handbags, jewelry and a safe following their ransacking of the residence on June 8.Upon sighting the suspects’ vehicle, a deputy attempted to instigate a stop, however, the suspects sped away leading to a pursuit. While attempting to evade the deputy, the suspects drove on the wrong side of the freeway, causing a head-on collision with a sedan. The driver of the sedan sustained serious injuries as a result. When apprehended, the suspects attempted to deceive officers by providing false Venezuelan identification. It was revealed that they are actually Chilean nationals visiting the U.S. under a visa waiver sanction by the Department of Homeland Security.Legal charges have since been filed against Navarretecorvalan for first-degree burglary, evading a peace officer, driving on the wrong side of the freeway causing injury or death, and possession of a forged ID card. Tobarfuentes was charged with first-degree burglary, possession of a forged ID card, and possession of burglary tools. Both suspects face significant prison terms if convicted on all counts. Reports indicate that many Chilean nationals have been entering the U.S. without undergoing background checks through the visa waiver program, raising concerns about the exploitation of the program to commit residential burglaries.
