While regions such as Van Nuys have seen relatively constant theft levels over the past years, areas like North Hollywood and Pacoima have experienced an unprecedented escalation in theft occurrences.This rising trend is not limited to Los Angeles but is seen across major metropolitan areas. The number of vehicle thefts has seen a sharp rise ever since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. When compared to pre-pandemic numbers, Los Angeles saw a 64% increase in automotive thefts in 2023, reaching over 25,000 incidents. There were 8,043 cars stolen across the city within the first four months of 2024 alone.Kia and Hyundai vehicles have been notably prevalent amongst the cars stolen, due in part to viral social media trends demonstrating how these cars may be easily stolen. Certain Chevrolet models, particularly Camaros, are also frequently targeted, due to the ability of criminals to clone their key fobs.Nationwide, over 1 million vehicles were stolen in 2023 according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, marking a 1% uptick from the previous year. Being the most populous state, California saw the highest volume of these thefts. The automobile industry and law enforcement are urged by industry experts to collaborate in developing more robust strategies to effectively combat this auto theft trend.
