On Sunday, a wrong-way driver reportedly caused a significant accident involving 11 vehicles on the 101 Freeway near the Camarillo Springs Road exit. Sources say the incident was initiated by a driver who was found to be under the influence of alcohol. The California Highway Patrol responded to reports around 12:05 a.m. Sunday of a driver, later identified as 24-year-old Luis Ocampo Cardoso of Santa Barbara, headed south in the northbound lanes of the 101 freeway coming from Camarillo. The vehicle in question, a 2008 Honda Civic, was reported to have rapidly caused the crash, striking multiple other vehicles head-on. The first vehicle hit, a 2016 Honda Civic, incurred severe damage, necessitating the extrication of its single occupant before they could be transported to Los Robles Hospital. Several other individuals were injured as a result of the pileup. Cardoso was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following treatment for injuries sustained during the crash. The accident caused almost three hours of closure on the northbound stretch of the 101 freeway to allow for an investigation. Authorities are still seeking to determine the point at which Cardoso entered the freeway and how far he traveled in the wrong direction prior to the collision.
