The police who responded to the scene at approximately 9:45 p.m. found a 1999 BMW 323i that had struck a black 2019 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The male motorcycle rider, unfortunately, did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead at the site of the crash.Initial investigations suggest that the rider was stationary at a red light on Orangethorpe Avenue when the BMW, traveling in the same lane, failed to reduce its speed or halt for the traffic signal. The BMW collided with the rear of the motorcycle, leading to the rider’s fatal ejection from his vehicle.Eyewitness accounts state that the BMW continued its eastbound course on Orangethorpe Ave with the motorcycle wedged beneath the car’s front. Onlookers pursued the BMW and apprehended the driver, a 44-year-old named Francisco Garcia-Vargas.Garcia-Vargas underwent a field sobriety test after the collision, during which he reportedly showed signs of instability. He was arrested on suspicion of driving without a license and felony DUI, alongside gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated charges.In an unexpected turn of events, a law enforcement vehicle that was securing the site of the accident was struck by another motorist, causing significant front-end damage. Fortunately, the officer near the vehicle escaped harm. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of intoxicated driving and the potential lethal consequences.
