A decade after the federal mandate to recall Takata airbags linked to over twenty-seven fatalities, data indicates that millions of U.S. residents are yet to have these devices replaced in their automobiles. A recent report released by CARFAX, the well-known vehicle information company, reveals that more than 6.4 million vehicles in the U.S. remain equipped with these defective airbags.According to this data, these airbags, which were ordered to be recalled, have also been linked to at least 400 injury cases. Roughly 40% of these vehicles, accounting for over 2.5 million, are located in states considered as ‘high risk’ due to high heat and humidity, conditions which can cause these devices to malfunction. Prolonged exposure to such conditions can lead to the Takata airbags deploying far more explosively than anticipated, subsequently launching pieces of metal into the vehicle’s cabin, thereby posing serious risks to occupants. The states recognized as high-risk by the government agency include Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas. Texas tops the list with approximately 788,000 unresolved Takata airbag recalls, followed by California with 739,000.The Takata airbag recall was initially announced in 2014, staggering the replacement rollout to allow manufacturers sufficient time to meet the immense demand. The recall spans across 19 automakers, encapsulating more than 67 million airbags in over 40 million vehicles. Specific vehicles outfitted with these airbags were manufactured between the years 2001 and 2015.Significantly, as these airbags are part of a mandatory safety recall, the owners of these vehicles are entitled to free replacement of these devices at a dealership.
