On Tuesday morning, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) confiscated approximately 200 pounds of methamphetamine following a car chase in downtown Los Angeles. This came about as CHP officers in the Southern Division attempted to halt a white Ford F-150 on the northbound 5 Freeway in Boyle Heights, after it crossed a gore point which is a triangular segment of the road between the freeway and an off ramp. The driver of the car refused to comply, speeding off and leading the authorities on a high-speed chase across several surface streets and highways. The chase eventually finished on 2nd Street, west of Figueroa Street in downtown Los Angeles. According to information from CHP, the confinement led to the discovery of multiple bags of packed methamphetamine. With the aid of a 5-year-old Czech Shepherd K-9 named Axel, trained for narcotics detection and patrol, officers searched the vehicle finding a tote containing 190 pounds of methamphetamine. This large sum has an estimated street value exceeding $3.4 million. In addition to the narcotics, approximately $5,000 in cash and a firearm were also retrieved from the scene. The driver, whose identity is being withheld pending an ongoing investigation, was apprehended at the scene. CHP continues to investigate the incident and encourages anyone with useful information to reach out to the Southern Division Special Services Unit.
