In response to a 65% rise in total crime in the first three months of 2024, a surge of law enforcement and public safety officers will be dispatched to patrol the Los Angeles Metro, as unanimously voted by Metro officials. This decision was made following an alarming series of violent incidents on Metro vehicles which included shootings, assaults, robberies, stabbings, and hijacks, some of which were fatal. The security situation prompted vigorous discussions amid Metro’s board members during a meeting on Thursday. The board, which consists of elected officials from various local bodies, including the Mayor of Los Angeles and the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, expressed their disappointment over the inadequate presence of law enforcement personnel on Metro rides.Post-meeting, Los Angeles Mayor called for a swift increase in law enforcement presence on Metro buses, trains, and stations to address the safety concerns of both drivers and passengers. Commencing Thursday, the approved resolution authorizes the deployment of 260 officers who will patrol the transit system daily. The resolution also establishes a unified command consisting of Metro security, the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and the Long Beach Police Department, who will jointly police the transit system. This integrated approach moreover mandates working cell phone and Wi-Fi coverage at all underground Metro stations and tunnels to ensure that riders can reach out for help during emergencies without fail.Addressing the board, one of the members shared their belief that the law enforcement presence – crucial to ensuring safety onboard – would be ineffective unless the officers actively patroled the transit system. The combined endeavors of these emergency measures, devised to reinforce safety on the Los Angeles Metro system, are anticipated to re-establish the confidence of the commuting public.
