A 66-year-old television industry worker died in a car crash after working an overnight shift of 14 hours on the 57 Freeway in San Dimas on a Saturday morning, sources say. The individual, recognized for his contributions in high-profile productions such as ‘Six Feet Under,’ ‘Star Trek,’ and the 2021 Marvel film ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ was involved in a wreck on the northbound side of the freeway. During the incident, his Toyota Highlander went off the road, climbed an embankment, overturned and came to rest on its roof. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The man, who was preparing to retire, had been working on the ABC television series ‘9-1-1.’ His accident took place just 20 minutes after wrapping up his shift, marking around 28 hours of work in just two days. His colleagues noted that despite his extensive experience, being a crew member on set was still an intense job requiring workers to clock in as much as 16 hours per day consistently. The circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, including considering factors like alcohol. However, those close to the victim find it hard to believe alcohol played a part due to the extreme workload and physical demands of the job. This tragic event has underscored existing concerns about long working hours and late-night commutes prevalent in the film industry. Sources with knowledge on the matter shared that the union was actively offering support to the victim’s family. Meanwhile, 20th Television, the company producing ‘9-1-1’, expressed its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. Investigation of the fatal crash is ongoing.
