In response to significant increases in violent incidents across California, Metro officials took action and unanimously authorized a boost in law enforcement and public safety officers to monitor transit systems. The decision was initiated by the Mayor of Los Angeles and passed in a Metro board meeting attended by a number of community members expressing their distress and dissatisfaction about the situation. In recent times, Metro riders and operators have been victims of numerous dangerous incidents, including shootings, stabbings, assaults, robberies, and even bus hijackings. Violent crime has escalated by a staggering 65% in the first quarter of 2024.Consequently, local officials, including the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, expressed their criticism concerning the scarcity of law enforcement personnel available to ensure rider safety. To address this issue promptly, the Mayor urged an immediate increase in law enforcement presence across Metro trains, buses, and stations. The approved resolution will ensure that 260 officers will be consistently present on buses and trains, surveying the transit system daily. It further established a coordinated command consisting of law enforcement agencies responsible for transit system safety, including Metro security, the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and the Long Beach Police Department. The decision also made provisions for improved communication networks. Fully functional cell phone reception and Wi-Fi coverage will be mandated in all underground Metro stations and tunnels, during transit, and on platforms. Patchy coverage has been a continued concern, with Metro leaders stating that it can hinder emergency calls for help.Metro’s board of directors, local bus drivers, and riders demand safety, stating that the agency’s security contracts are essential and need visible implementation on trains and buses.
