Sources announce a collaboration between the Los Angeles Police Department and Hyundai to hold a free event aimed at preventing vehicle theft. A critical software update, applicable to select trim levels of Hyundai vehicles from 2011 to 2021, will be available to drivers at this event.Hyundai and Kia vehicles were recently at the center of a social media trend that informed viewers on how to bypass the car’s security features, dismantle their steering columns, and achieve direct access to the vehicle’s ignition. This trend, dubbed the ‘Kia Challenge’, led to such a surge in thefts that certain Hyundai and Kia drivers were even dropped from their auto insurance providers.Vehicles without push-button ignitions and immobilizing anti-theft devices were especially vulnerable, accounting for approximately 4 million vehicles, mainly base trim models. Due to this concern, both manufacturers have recommended owners to bring their cars to dealerships for security updates. To combat this, a free anti-theft safety update event has been organized. It will take place over the weekend at Eagle Rock Plaza, located at 2828 Colorado Blvd. Specially trained Hyundai technicians will install the update, which takes roughly 30 minutes to complete. The update will be available for Hyundai drivers on Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m to 6 p.m., and on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. No appointments are necessary. In addition to the software update, the Los Angeles Police Department will supply free steering wheel locks to all Hyundai drivers. These locks are designed to prevent theft by immobilizing the steering wheel and can only be opened with a unique key.For additional information about the software update, drivers are encouraged to contact their local Hyundai dealer or find a free update clinic.
